IJM Uganda is working to eliminate property grabbing in Uganda by bringing rescue and restoration to individual victims, accountability to their perpetrators and transformation to the public justice system as a whole.  As a Communications Specialist on IJM’s System Reform team, you will have the opportunity to craft and publish the messages that will change the public’s perception of property grabbing and prompt the public justice system to protect people from it.


This position is based in Kampala, Uganda and reports to IJM’s Director of System Reform



Message Development

  • Manage IJM Kampala’s overall mass media and communications strategy.
  • Develop educational messages surrounding succession rights and criminal accountability.
  • Adapt messaging for radio, newspaper, storefront and other forms of media publication.
  • Write and design radio spots, newspaper articles, adverts and graphic presentations.
  • Draft, design, translate and edit printed materials for training, education, and awareness raising.
  • Translate and contextualize messaging for audiences of various educational levels.

Media Relations

  • Develop and manage relationships with members of the media in Kampala and Mukono.
  • Write and disseminate regular press releases, briefings and editorials to the local media.
  • Ensure that media messages and media interactions are conducted in line with the highest professional standards and comply with existing laws, standards, and professional ethics.

Support and Development

  • Liaise and contract with media, publication and advertising vendors in support of IJM goals.
  • Cooperate with other team members in adapting media strategy to System Reform goals.
  • Provide miscellaneous graphic and written resources to members of the IJM team.
  • Cooperate with members of the Casework team in developing stories about IJM cases.
  • Participate in IJM programs to develop professionalism and Christian formation.
  • Assist in hosting guests, visitors, and volunteers.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Travel Requirements

  • This position requires occassional travel to and from areas within Kampala and Mukono District during working hours.



Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in media, journalism, broadcasting or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • At least four years of experience in journalism, radio, media relations or related field.
  • Fluency in English and Luganda, with excellent writing and speaking in both.
  • Computer literate with proficiency in MS Word, Outlook and Excel.
  • Experience with Adobe Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) or similar program.
